Keeping yourself entertained in Chicago is easy to do if you enjoy watching movies. A popular summertime activity is frequenting drive-ins and other outdoor movie theaters. There are many to choose from, but some deliver a better experience than others.

Pilsen’s ChiTown Movies features an extra-large screen that can easily be seen from every single parking spot. Classic movies are shown nightly, with occasional special events. For example, in October 2020, ChiTown Movies will present their annual Music Box Theater festival, featuring horror movies. Whether they come for a festival or just a regular showing, moviegoers can order food to be delivered to their car. In addition to the typical movie theater snacks, they can also offer wings, tacos, and similar foods.

At the Lincoln Square Davis Theater, locals flock to see movies based in their hometown. These include Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the Blues Brothers. They can order from Ada Street, which offers a full menu of drive-in type foods while they are watching.

The Chicago Drive-In has two locations, with one in Bridgeview and one in Hoffman Estates. The Bridgeview location is directly in front of the SeatGeek Stadium. Moviegoers are treated to a 70 -foot screen, with most of the chosen flicks being family-friendly movies like Honey, I Shrunk The Kids.

Last but not least, Chi-Together, located in the parking lot of Soldier’s Field, live music is offered in addition to popular movies. Viewers are treated to free popcorn for the duration of each movie they attend there. There are plans for the near future that include showings of Madagascar and Avengers: Infinity War.

Outdoor movie screenings are also a fun alternative to the traditional drive-in theater. Some of the most unusual in Chicago include the Floating Cinema, being held in September 2020. Viewers watch movies from mini boats with an eight-person capacity. The screenings cover a variety of older and newly released movies.

There are many parks throughout Chicago, most of which are showing movies throughout the summer season. In total, 45 different parks are hosting their own movie nights. Each showing has a maximum capacity of 100 people, so the earlier someone arrives, the more likely they are to get tickets for that night.
